Beyo and Mardi Frankincense are harvested along
the coastal escarpments and inland East of Berbera in Somaliland
to around the Horn in Puntland.
Somali Frankincense is of the highest quality and best aroma
to be found anywhere in the world. The Boswellia trees from
which Frankincense is harvested are owned by many different
families in Somalia.
Collectors farm the gum and sell to merchants. Collectors may
enjoy up to 100% of the revenues of the gum, but mostly sharing
a portion of the revenue with the Gum Tree owners.
Merchants grade and clean the gums ready for export.
Trade of Frankincense dates back to the ancient Mediterranean
civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome, and today Frankincense
is chewed, burnt and distilled by millions of people each day.
